Als wetenschapscommunicatie ook gaat over de presentatie van gegevens, is dit een erg gave manier om dat te doen!

With the drama and urgency of a sportscaster, Hans Rosling debunks myths about the so-called 'developing world' using extraordinary animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation. The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop. Asian countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better national health and wealth. Animated bell curves representing national income distribution squish and flatten. In Rosling's hands, global trends -- life expectancy, child mortality, poverty rates -- become clear, intuitive and even playful.'

 Het artikel 'Framing Science' heeft in de wetenschapscommunicatiewereld (helaas nog niet in Nederland) al het nodige stof doen opwaaien. Hierbij de intro, een link naar het artikel, en een link naar een handige overzichtspagina met een inventarisatie van reacties.

Issues at the intersection of science and politics, such as climate change, evolution, and embryonic stem cell research, receive considerable public attention, which is likely to grow, especially in the United States as the 2008 presidential election heats up. Without misrepresenting scientific information on highly contested issues, scientists must learn to actively 'frame' information to make it relevant to different audiences. Some in the scientific community have been receptive to this message. However, many scientists retain the well-intentioned belief that, if laypeople better understood technical complexities from news coverage, their viewpoints would be more like scientists', and controversy would subside.

There are many good science writers and press officers around. This post is not for them, as they will certainly reject all of its key points. Nor is it for the members of the media who are already adept at producing sensationalistic, inaccurate, or downright ridiculous science news stories. This post is for those writers somewhere in the middle who sometimes get it wrong but can't quite master the art of atrocious science reporting.

 De World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) heeft twee leuke boekjes ter download in de aanbieding, die ook interessant zijn voor ons soort mensen. De 2007 editie van de Science Journalist Associations geeft een recent overzicht van alle wetenschapsjournalisten- en wetenschapscommunicatorenverengingen uit de hele wereld. Laat je verbazen door de grootte van de wereld!
En 'Setting Up Your Own Science Journalists' Association' geeft tips en truuks aan verenigingsopbouwwerkers. Die ligt bij mij dus op het nachtkastje... :-)
